In this episode, Luz chats with fellow first generation college students about what their experience has been like with learning about and being involved in internships. We chat about how valuable they can be to help you figure out career goals, learn valuable new skills, and grow as a person.

In this episode you will hear from:

  • High school student Julia who has had internship-like experiences through volunteering and summer programs and has been able to gain valuable skills that then led her to found her own organization, First Gen Support, which has taught her so much more than what she could have imagined. Through her various opportunities she has learned how important it is to network, be open-minded about trying new things, and be a more effective leader and communicator.

  • College student Hidai who was able to learn about internships early on and utilized her networks to find out the most she could about potential internships so she could present herself as the best candidate for the job. She used internships as learning opportunities that taught her skills in practice that she wouldn’t have had through class alone. She breaks down what her experiences have been at different companies and offers tips for students who are looking for opportunities.

  • College and graduate school graduate Terry who learned about internships a little later through the help of mentors and ultimately used the experiences to figure out what his career trajectory could look like. He was able to figure out some of the environments he would thrive in in a future career, the industries that he came to find out were not right for him, and learned new skills along the way. As someone who also hires interns, he provides a look at what it’s like to be on the other side of the interview table and offers tips for students that applying to internship positions.
