In this episode, Cody chats with 3 fellow first-gens who highlight their experience and interest in the world of education.

Every May, schools across the country will celebrate Teacher/Educator Appreciation Week. Educators not only teach and support first generation students, but many also identify as first generation students themselves. In this episode, we speak with a high school senior planning to major in education, a college student finishing up her student teaching and a professional educator. Listen as we discuss teacher preparation, what exposure they had to the teaching profession, essential skills one must have to be a teacher and what is involved in the day to day work as an educator.

In this episode you will hear from:

  • Hannah, a HS Senior who plans to major in Elementary Education. Hannah has had the opportunity to take part in multiple educational-related experiences while in high school, including being a member of the Teacher Internship cohort program at her school. She can’t wait to shape the lives of young students as a teacher.

  • Kyliah, a College Senior who plans to teach math at the Middle School level. Kyliah has received lots of support and college experiences, not only from her university but also through the Golden Apple Scholarship Foundation. Golden Apple has provided Kyliah with the financial benefits to make college possible and also the professional development opportunities to grow as a soon-to-be educator.

  • Shamoon, a School Counselor who’s initial career path as a high school senior was Business, not Education. Having immigrated to the United States as a child from Iran, Shamoon has experienced multiple educational systems in Iran, the US and Germany. Shamoon often draws upon his family's work ethic and his commitment to helping others in his work as a School Counselor. As a Counselor, he strives to  continuously enhance the support to his story and is passionate about the growth of the School Counselor profession.
