Episode 75: Student Involvement

In this episode, Ginny sits down with Florida Consortium executive director to discuss how being involved on campus can benefit a student during their college journey.

The college experience and getting an education is more than what happens in the classroom.  Being involved on your college campus is correlated with higher GPAs and an increased likelihood of graduating.  Outside of the classroom is where students can build a lot of the “soft skills” that employers are looking for when hiring, traits such as problem solving, working in a team, and leadership.

In this episode you will hear from:

  • Michael, a first generation college graduate, who works in Higher Ed Administration at the Florida Consortium of Metropolitan Research Universities. He also has interests in research, policy in employability, success of transfer students, and student involvement.  Michael grew up the son of a military family and has lived in such places such as South Florida and Washington state.

Thanks again to today’s guest Dr. Michael Preston, for sharing his expertise with our audience. And thank you for tuning in to How to College for first-gens! After listening to our guest, you can see that being involved on campus has many more benefits other than just being fun.  Hopefully you have also learned what the Office of Student Involvement or Office of Campus Activities does on your campus and how to reach out to them.
